Ottawa Mounting and Laminating

Encapsulation

Encapsulation laminating is a process applying plastic laminate to both sides of a substrate. The substrate is run between two rolls of laminate and through heated rollers or shoes under relatively high (from 280 F to 310 F) heat and pressure. Wrinkling or creasing may occur on thin substrates like tracing paper or has been damaged from prior handling. Colors may change due to the heat. Laser color copies with oily surface may cause the laminate to peel.

You have a choice of the laminate trimmed to the edge of the paper, or to leave 1/8” lip of lamination.

As long as the edges are sealed and the laminate is not damaged, printed materials are waterproof and can sustain abuse and be exposed to the weather. Laminates vary in the amount of ultra violet (UV) protection they provide. They may extend the life of an object in direct sun light by anywhere from 30% to 100%. Laminating films are available in 1.5, 3, 5, and 10 mil with gloss or matte finish.
